ARRATIA, BEER
is pleased to present the first solo exhibition in Germany of the Italian artist

NICO VASCELLARI

Opening: April 13 at 6pm
April 13– May 19, 2007

Nico Vascellari dropped out of university to focus on his singing with With Love, a punk/noise band with which he recorded several albums and toured around Europe, USA and Japan. This intense performative experience informs Vascellari’s practice as visual artist, which includes performance, photography and video.

A new installation will be on view at ARRATIA, BEER. The installation includes two works; one is “Broken Voices” a sculptural object made of a tape recorder refurbished with a special mechanism. While the tape recorder plays vocal recordings of the artist, the mechanism pushes at random the recorder buttons. In doing so, the sound is interrupted and parts of the tape will be re-recorded during the exhibition. The other work is “Broken Landscapes”; a suite of collages made from fashion magazines cutouts. The collages depict fractured landscapes that compulsively celebrate and dissect the fashion system. In the artist’s words “in my work ideas of deconstruction generally come from my experience as singer in a punk band. As in concerts I leave a lot of parts open to improvisation but within a very thought out and practiced musical set.”

Nico Vascellari was born in Vittorio Veneto, Italy in 1976. Currently his work is included in the “DB Collection Italy”,, Milan and “Apocalittici e Integrati”, MAXXI Museum, Rome. In 2005 he was awarded “The First International Prize for Performance”. This year Vascellari received the “Young Italian Art Award 2006-2007”and will participate in the upcoming Venice Biennial.
