From 31 January until 4 February
Berlin hosts the Transmediale - New Media festival

Festival for art and digital culture 2007

The 20th transmediale festival again explores how art and society are changing under the influence of media and technologies which become more and more dominant in our everydaycontemporary art, digital media like video and electronic networks are now so wide-spread that a strict definition of what constitutes ‘media art’ seems no longer possible. Weculture’. This name is supposed to demonstrate the step away from the niche of ‘media art’, yet still points to the field of tensionculture and digital technologies, which continues to form the main driving force of the festival.

+ Visuals: Telematique & LFT & u-matic (DE)

WASTED 4 - hosted by Pure and Donna Summer:
Blurring the lines between Breakcore, Punk, Grindcore, Performance Art and Noise, WASTED 4 kicks off CTM's 8th edition with a wall shaking acoustic-meets-digital assault.
Expect two nights of insanity going on and on till the break of dawn at club Maria am Ostbahnhof - including one of the very few extreme performances from Austria's Fuckhead. Belgium's "Breakcore Gives Me Wood" Gigglin Dildas will have a few things to shout about while America's Dev/Null will surely melt your brain with rapidfire grind-shrapnel. Representing Berlin there will be "Clash of the Titans" resident DJ Poingi, hardcore Drum'n'Bass master Bazooka and Grindcore band Bolz'n and versatile Patric Catani. Zombieflesheater will drive some nerve-shattering gabber noize up your spine and veteran Canadian DJ C64 will keep it all flowing while Brighton's Wrong music crew makes a mess of the place with a party-block of sets from a few of its members. Tim Exile will invite you to his all live, all improvised nuisance gabbaret lounge. And finally UK band Trencher will kill off whatever brain cells you have left. Oh, and Venetian Snares will do a set on the 27th as well! WOW!

// Venue: Club Maria am Ostbahnhof, An der Schillingbruecke, Berlin / SECOND STAGE

Ludditák (HU) / Peto Tázok (SZ) feat. Karaoke Tundra (SK) / Mad-EP (US) / dDamage (FR) / DJ Ai (FR)

The descendants of Afrika Bambaata have spread far and wide, a vast and untraceable diaspora with corrupted genealogies – there are bastard children growing up everywhere, the Planet Rock family resemblance monstrously reinterpreted. Tonight CTM's second floor presents mutant strains of Abstract Hip Hop that have carried the recessive Kraftwerk gene through generations, finding expression in the weirdest ways.

[5] CTM.07 - CODE BLACK

// Date: Sunday, 28 January, 2007
// Venue: Club Maria am Ostbahnhof, An der Schillingbruecke, Berlin / MAIN STAGE

Birchville Cat Motel (NZ) / Antoine Chessex (FR) / Burial Chamber Trio - Greg Anderson (US), Oren Ambarchi (AU) & Attila Csihar (HU) / Jazkamer (Metal Music Machine Line-Up) (NO)

The experimental drones of Birchville Cat Motel fill space and envelop one's spirit like a psychoactive substance. Using connected breath techniques and a whole battery of guitar amplifiers, Antoine Chessex draws discordant tones from his sax that are mightier and deeper than a ship's foghorn. The Burial Chamber Trio - Greg Anderson, Oren Ambarchi und extreme-vocalist, Attila Csihar turn up as an unholy alliance, and submerge us in destructive subsonic soundwaves occasionally joined by Zslot Machat on the drums. The Noise-Duo Jazkamer (Lasse Marhaug and John Hegre have joined forces with Manngard and Enslaved to record the Metal Music Machine album: the ultimate combination of electronic Noise and Metal.
A night of innovative projects from the fields of Noise, Metal and Drone is a long-standing tradition at the CTM, but this evening goes one step further - with a line-up of hitherto unheard monster-sounds that may well cause nausea, narcolepsy and rigor mortis - You have been warned!

WHITE COLUMNS

DODIE BELLAMY will read
“DIGGING THROUGH KATHY ACKER’S STUFF”

“Kathy Acker, the novelist and theorist, died from breast cancer in 1997. Her papers are at Duke, but her clothes and accessories remain in the possession of her executor Matias Viegener. Beginning Tuesday, January 9, I will display a selection of Kathy Acker's clothes at White Columns in New York City, and on Wednesday, January 10 at 7:30, I will give a presentation, "Digging Through Kathy Acker's Stuff." Last February while visiting Viegener in Los Angeles, I rummaged through Acker's extravagant designer wardrobe, and wheedled one of her Gautier dresses from him, and a couple pieces of jewelry. Possessing such intimate effects of a woman I wasn't so much friends with as in awe of, I felt compelled to write it all out. I meditate upon relics, ghosts, compulsive shopping, archives, make-up, our drive to mythologize the dead, Acker's own self-mythologizing, the struggle among followers to define Acker, bitch fights, and the numina of DNA.” – Dodie Bellamy.
